As part of the Buddhafield vision we are drawn to nature as the primary context for our life and practice - to the beauty of the natural world, to the living experience of interconnectedness it gives us, to the ancient sacred sites and landscapes around us. Therefore we wish to create sanctuaries and shrines, for our own and others' benefit; to live simply and to live lightly on the land, using appropriate technology and exemplifying best practice in all that we do. BUDDHAFIELD SACRED LANDSCAPE APPEALFor ten years Buddhafield has been evolving its unique blend of community, meditation teaching and creative fun. Our camping retreats, cafe and festival have touched the lives of thousands of people. Buddhafield's vision is to create sacred landscape in Britain in which Buddhist and ecological principles can take root and thrive. But we are not content simply to dream. Keeping our charges low enables a wide range of people to benefit from our activities, however it also means our financial resources are minimal. So borrowing to buy land is a leap of faith, but one that has proven to be well founded. Buddhafield SitesBuddhafield is a creative meeting point between the urgent environmental concerns of today and the timeless relevance of Buddhist teachings. To bring our vision to fruition it is necessary for us to own the land we work with. FROG MILLIn 2006 we bought seventeen acres of land on Dartmoor, called 'Frog Mill', with the help of loans from our friends.
The site, of approximately 17 acres, consists of several fields with thick established hedgerows a stream dividing the site and has views of Dartmoor. The site is large enough, and has enough flat space to hold our larger retreat events, such as the Child Friendly retreat. Buying this land will mean that our larger retreats will at last have a site that can be developed for their needs. Our aim for this tranquil site is to develop a magical and safe environment, providing the opportunity for adults and children to experience connection with a beautiful piece of land, hopefully for many years into the future. We are looking into various kinds of tree planting, including an organic orchard, and coppice for fuel and wildlife habitat. Taking on this project has been a leap of faith for us and we wish to wholeheartedly thank all who have contributed £44,000 to our Land Appeal so far. You can help! We want to secure Frog Mill as a focus for the unique community of individuals and families that is Buddhafield. To do this we still need to pay off another £41,000.
If... All this would add up to £42,500 which would pay for the land plus a small percentage for improvements to the land, for example drainage. (Standing order amounts add up approximately to the full amount shown). With heartfelt thanks from the Buddhafield team. Ways to contibute
The Sustainable Development Fund of Dartmoor National Park Authority have very kindly given us a grant of £1,300 to do wildlife and habitat surveys and consultations and create a plan for the land at Frog Mill; a plan for sustainability and beauty.
BROADHEMBURYThanks to your generousity and the work of the Buddhafield collective over the last 5 years we now own outright 20 acres of land near the village of Broadhembury in Devon. On this land (very varied and including wetland and deciduous bluebell woods) we are beginning to turn our vision into reality. At Broadhembury we are now integrating the magic of our retreats with the challenge of practicing sustainable land use in a real and long term way. In 2004 we employed the permaculturalist Phil Corbett to carry out a survey on our land. Following this consultation Sandy Lacey developed a permaculture design for the land, which includes planting trees for firewood and for fruit; creating terraces to provide flat land for camping, and planting hedges for shelter and privacy. Work on the design got underway during the winter of 2004, and continues. Work on the land will be an integral part of at least one Buddhafield Retreat each season. Out of a desire for the well being not only of humankind but also animals, birds and the earth itself, Buddhafield is taking a leading role in developing an eco-Buddhist culture in this country.
