Retreat Information

Elemental Being

Retreat Calendar

Contemplation of the six Elements, Earth, Water, Fire, Wind/Air, Space and Consciousness, can bring us into deeper relationship with the living reality of the environment, ourselves, and others: with the Dharma, a deeper and truer experience of Reality.

We will be exploring these Elements in different ways and on different levels (all optional): through direct experience of the elements within our own bodies and minds, as well as in the world around us through reflection, and using traditional Buddhist meditation practices, including the Six Element Practice.

We will also be introducing some simple traditional shamanic practices that we have found contribute to this exploration, and will be doing rituals both in the shrine tent and in nature - including the transforming ceremony of 'inipi' - literally translating as 'home of the spirit-breath' ('sweat-lodge'), in which we immerse ourselves in all the elements, bringing the internal and external worlds together in both a collective and deeply personal experience.

There will be extended periods of silence to enhance and support our practice during the retreat. Team specialities are as follows (though teaching will be shared and anything can happen!) Dhiramati: ritual and story telling; Vidyasri: shamanic journeying, rituals, & sweat lodge ; Kamalashila: meditation and dharma teaching. Also Padmapani: shrines and music.

Team biographies

Kamalashila has been teaching meditation for over thirty years. He has been focusing on the Elements practice for many years and led several Elements retreats for Buddhafield. He is currently writing a book on the Six Elements.

Vidyasri has been practising and teaching meditation and ritual retreats for over 25yrs. She has also practised and trained in various Shamanic traditions, the Elements being the main theme & inspiration - and is now living in the hills north-west of Valencia, living and practising in nature, co-creating a small retreat-centre, Amitavati.

Dhiramati has a longstanding connection with Buddhafield and has led many retreats with us. He is widely appreciated for his depth of connection with all things mythic; for leading expressive, devotional and occasionally wild pujas, and for creating beautiful shrine spaces.

Padmapani has been a member of the Western Buddhist Order since 1975 and has a longstanding connection with Buddhafield. Padmapani is known for his playfulness, creativity and his inspired use of the imagination in teaching meditation.
